SPLASH in Newtown, Sydney, Australia

One of my good friends and I are on a bit of a health kick, but, I still wanted to eat out at a restaurant. We decided to go on a bit of a girl date and opted for seafood. She suggested we head to Newtown to a restaurant called Splash Seafood and Grill and having seen the outside before, i agreed.

Upon arrival, the waitress initially seated us at a table between two other occupied tables... even though the restaurant was rather empty. We asked to move seats and relocated down the back of the restaurant.

Now having being seated and comfortable, I took notice of the atmosphere. Rather relaxed, warm but almost lifeless.

The waitress we had was incredible. She was polite and attentive but not annoying. She paid attention to the little things such as refilling our table water and checking every so often if we needed anything else - always with a smile. Great hospitality.

The menu, on first inspection, looks incredible. A lovely range of seafood, meats and tempting desserts!
We ordered calamari (marinated in garlic, salt and pepper) and BBQ octopus (marinated in garlic, chilli and vinegar) as entrees to share, which arrived promptly.
The calamari was lightly battered and the texture was creamy and soft. With each mouthful it melted in my mouth, buttery and salty.
The BBQ octopus was garlicky and the chilli was mild. It was cooked very well, not chewy or rubbery. The vinegar wasn't over powering allowing focus on the meaty texture and flavour of the octopus itself.
Both the entrees were lovely!

I ordered coriander barramundi as my main and unfortunately this dish ruined the satisfaction i'd had with my experience so far. The fish came out and was poorly presented with a side salad that looked like it came straight from a pre prepared bag of supermarket salad. The barramundi was completely covered in what looked like lazy herbs that came out of a tube and a sprig of parsley was thrown on the top. To me the seafood didn't seem very fresh, and it tasted oily, tired and as if a whole lot of poor quality flavour was heaped on to mask the uninteresting, slightly musty taste.

We decided against dessert, although they looked scrumptious... so did the fish!
We paid our bill, which came to about $60 dollars for two people, which would have been completely reasonable providing I had enjoyed my main.

All in all, i would not go to Splash Seafood and Grill again as the main meal just completely disappointed and for those after a bit of atmosphere along with tasty food, i recommend looking elsewhere.
